Renormalization group scale-setting in astrophysical systems

Abstract:

The parameters of gravitational action become scale dependent through regularization and renormalization procedure when using the formalism of quantum field theory in classical curved space-time. This is also the case in the approach to quantum gravity based on the idea of asymptotic safety through the use of average effective action. It is then crucial to determine how this dependence on artificial scales introduced by regularization procedure relates to physical scales involved. In this talk we would like to present a simple, well defined procedure for a consistent choice of scale based on covariance arguments. Scale dependence is introduced at the level of the equations of motion for gravitational field. Using the afore-mentioned procedure in astrophysical setting results in a particular choice of scale, which was shown to provide good results when applied to the study of galaxy rotation curves without invoking the existence of dark matter.
