Abstract: Flemish artists were very numerous artistic community in early modern Vienna in the 2nd half of the 17th century. Very important role was played by House of Habsburgs, namely by archduke Leopold Wilhelm, who as the governor of south Netherlands was very familiar with art of Low Countries and after his return back to Vienna in 1656 many artists came with him as well as his magnificent collection was transported from Hague to Vienna. After young Leopold ascended the imperial throne as Leopold I in 1658 he chose similar artistic taste as his uncle Leopold Wilhelm. In 1660s many painters, engravers, art dealers or publishers of Flemish origin were active in Vienna. They married, baptized children, witnessed at the weddings of colleagues not only from Netherlands, some of them worked for imperial court, church or aristocratic clients others cooperated on extensive orders made by court or nobles. Most of them naturally merged with the population of the cosmopolitan center of Habsburg monarchy, literally have found a new homes here. My lecture, based on archival notes and preserved pieces of art will present some of these little known artists, will show how they came to the city, how they merged with the local society, how they searched for contracts and how successful they were.
