Titel: Internationalism in the Age of Nationalism

Ort: Hs. 45, Zeit: Mittwoch, 23.1.2013, 18:30 h s.t.

Abstract: For all the revivification of the history of international organizations, the history of internationalism still remains aloof from the mainstream history of the twentieth century, and the narrative of nationalism. At the same time historical constructivist explorations of nations as invented or imagined have hardly glanced sideways at how over the same period international communities were imagined in relation to national communities. This is despite the fact that, as I also want to argue, the history of internationalism maps profoundly onto the genealogy of nations and nationalism, and onto the theoretical paradigm that has dominated the historiography of nations and nationalism since the late twentieth century.

Zur Person: Glenda Sluga is Professor of International History at the University of Sydney. She is most recently the author of Internationalism in the Age of Nationalism (2013), The Nation, Psychology and International Politics (2006), The Problem of Trieste and the Italo-Yugoslav Border, and Gendering European History (2000)i. She is researching the international history of cosmopolitanism through a study of women at the Congress of Vienna, generously funded by the Australian Research Council. In 2002 she was awarded the Max Crawford Medal by the Australian Academy of the Humanities. In 2006 she was appointed a member of the International Scientific Committee for the History of UNESCO.
