CLARENCE EDWARD DUTTON (1841-1912)
Born on May 15, 1841, DUTTON studied at Yale College, where he graduated in 1860. In the Civil War (1862-1865) he became lieutenant and later major. In 1875 he joined the U.S. Geological Survey and carried out geological investigations in the Grand Canyon in Colorado and of the plateaus of Utah. He retired from the army in 1901 and died on January 4, 1912. His major contributions to seismology was his official report on the earthquake in Charleston (August 31, 1886) and a theory of isostasy. He also invented this term of isostasy.
