Born in Radcliffe in 1638 he studied medicine in Cambridge. He carried out several journeys to study the history of nature in Britain and France and worked as a physician in York. In 1684 he moved to London and became member of the Royal Society. In 1709 he became personal physician of Queen Ann and died on February 2, 1722. For him the cause of earthquakes is phosphorus as the inflammable spirit of pyrite.
