| As astronomer SCHMIDT studied the changes in stars, sun-spots, comets and the zodiac light. In 1878 he published a detailed map of the moon. At the age of 20 he started to collect material for a global earthquake catalogue. He contributed to NÖGGERATH's study of the Rhineland earthquake in 1846 the calculation of the propagation speed of the earthquake wave. In 1858 he became director of the observatory in Athens and thus had the opportunity to study earthquakes in Southeastern Europe. In the second edition of his seismological study 'Studien über Erdbeben' he provided he catalogue of this earthquake region from the earliest times until 1878. For the period until 1859 he relied on the catalogues of PERREY and MALLET, while for the period after that he used his own documentation. In the theory of earthquakes he studied the astronomical and meteorological aspects of earthquakes. |
