THALES of MILET (624 - 546 B.C.)
THALES is considered by ARISTOTLE to be the founder of Ionic philosophy of nature. The period of his lifetime was calculated according to his famous prognosis of a solar eclipse in the year 985, that he made in the spring of his life at the age of 40. Since there are no written texts left, different interpretations of his philosophy emerged soon after his death. He is considered to be the founder of scientific geometry and he is attributed to have established the axiom of the right-angled triangle in a semi-circle and to have calculated the height of the pyramids. Water or humidity are the most basic principles for him. Consequently his earthquake theory maintains that the movement of the earth disk on the ocean is the cause of earthquakes.
