HEAT Help

HEAT Help To switch between the two browsers, press ALT+TAB or close the help window.

We can distinguish the following types of frames:

  1. the menu frame: a narrow bar on top of the screen
  2. the contents frame: at the left side, the table of contents is given
  3. the foot note window: at the right side at the bottom, where the footnotes are shown
  4. the documents window: the actual contents are shown here
For navigating in the documents window, use the right mouse key or the 'back' key in order to return to the previous content.

The document unit is a single chapter (or sub-chapter), according to the printed book version. Whether a document unit is an introduction to a main chapter or is a sub-chapter, can only be seen by looking at OVERVIEW.

OVERVIEW

This function is context sensitive and shows the position of the chapter you are actually located in. The chapter that is currently active is shown in red. If the frame is red, you are located in an unmarked introduction to a chapter.

In case you access pictures via the menu items BIOGRAPHIES and MULTIMEDIA, you can see the relative position in the whole HEAT document by clicking at OVERVIEW.

You may switch between the overview and the tabular overview (links at the lower end of the document). In case you jump back from multimedia contents, biographies, the table of contents, etc., it is always context sensitive, i.e. by clicking on the CONTEXT button the chapter is loaded that it belongs to.

Returning to the home page

  1. Each document has a copy right notice at the end: "HEAT Editors". By clicking on this text, you enter the introductory page
  2. When the contents document in the left frame is active, you may also click on the HEAT button above
  3. The introductory page can also be accessed via the graphical overview "OVERVIEW"
The horizontal menu bar allows a linear reading of the text. By activating the buttons "PREVIOUS" and "NEXT", you go forwards or backwards from one chapter to the other (according to the organisation of chapters in the contents frame).

"CONTEXT" should be used when you start from other documents (multimedia, biographies, etc.) and want to access the text chapter that such a document belongs to.

SEARCH

For searching, a JAVA applet is used (thus the browser you use must be JAVA enabled). After clicking on a hit, the relevant page is shown in a new browser window.

The search can be limited to individual main parts of the whole HEAT system.

TERMINOLOGY

You may choose seismological terms from a list and they are shown in a new window.
