Instructions to Authors

The "Verhandlungen der Zoologisch Botanischen Gesellschaft in Österreich" are published in annual volumes. The journal accepts original scientific work dealing with ecological or systematic issues. As stipulated in the Society's statutes, preference is given to work related to Austria or its neighbouring countries. Acceptance of papers is contingent upon a review process with referees from the respective field of research.

A diskette with the text (in Word, WordPerfect, or Wordstar) should accompany the manuscript.

Submissions of manuscripts without the text on diskette are only accepted in well-founded cases and after prior consultation with the editors. In such cases, the manuscript must be printed on one side only, in DIN A4 format with a page layout of 15.2 x 22 cm, and be 1.5-spaced. The following markings are essential: dashed line = space out, wavy line = italics (only for scientific genus and species names), capitals for author's names.

Texts on diskette should be formatted as follows: page layout: 15.2 x 22 cm; 1.5-spaced, bold type as necessary; italics (for scientific genus and species names); small capitals for author's names. Commonly used typefaces (for example Times Roman) with a size of 12 (no smaller!) are preferred. Manuscripts (tables and figures included) should not exceed 25 pages. Lengthier contributions will only be accepted in special cases and with consent of the board (committee) of the Zoological-Botanical Society, whereby the authors may be charged for the additional costs.

The form and structure of the manuscripts should adhere to the following norm:

Title of the contribution
The family and given names of the author(s)
Summary in English and German
Keywords (English)
Introduction
Material and Methods
Results (and)
Discussion
References

If the research cannot be organized according to the above format, then other subdivisions between the Introduction and References will be acceptable. Space should be provided at the end of the manuscript for the submission date, followed by the detailed address of the author or authors.

In the running text, publications are to be cited according to the author's name and year of publication, for example (HUBER 1982). More than one paper by the same author in one and the same year are differentiated in the text by a, b, c, etc., for example (HUBER 1982a). The respective letter must also be added to the reference in the References section. The literature in the References section is to be cited alphabetically based on author names:

SAUBERER F. & TRAPPE E., 1938: Temperatur und Feuchtigkeitsmessungen in Bergwäldern. Crtbl. Ges. Forstw. 67, 1 - 32.

Figures must be submitted in print-ready form and may not exceed 15.2 x 22 cm, including the figure legends. The size of symbols, letters and numbers must be clearly legible after reduction by 1/5. Black & white photographs are accepted. Legends, in German and English, should be submitted on a separate sheet.

Tables must also be submitted in print-ready form. In exceptional cases (and with the consent of the editors), oversized formats can be published as folding tables; otherwise, the same measurements as above apply. Short tables with legends should be embedded in the text. The table legends should be provided in German and English.

Every author will receive 25 reprints of his/her paper. Additional reprints can be ordered at cost by noting the desired number of copies on the proofs.

NOTE: As of 2001/2002 the Society plans to edit a second volume of the Verhandlungen ("B-series") devoted to publishing Society lectures and popular science articles. Submissions here will be subject to the same principal guidelines as the main series.
