This project studies the governance of biomarkers. Drawing on empirical case studies, the project explores the complex trajectories of biomarkers moving from their design and development to their bio-medical application. The project focuses on biomarker governance. The successful introduction and application of biomarkers, we argue, depends on the interaction, coordination, and management of a large set of elements. We call this coordination and management process the governance of biomarkers. Moreover, this project also tries to develop an understanding of the kind of differences that biomarkers make in bio-medical practices, exploring how bio-medical practices, disease and health, individuals and collectives are governed through biomarkers.
The project has started in November 2009 and will end in June 2012.
It is funded by the Genome Programme GEN-AU of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science and Research.
