Abstract

English abstract

This paper relies on an Academic Guest Lecture held for the alumni association “Verein der AbsolventInnen des Instituts für Ethnologie, Kultur- und Sozialanthropologie” at the Department of Cultural and Social Anthropology, at the University of Vienna, in the run-up to the 1st ERIC WOLF LECTURE given by Marshall Sahlins and Sydel Silverman in November 2002.

Its focus lies on aspects of Eric Wolf’s oeuvre, which play an important role in the recent debates on globalization in social and cultural anthropology and whose underlying questions are still (or again) topical in a great number of theoretical discourses. Particular reference is made to the links between culture, society, and structural conditions. To fit the occasion it was the intention to emphasize Wolf in the context of the debate on globalization in anthropology by confronting him with other leading theorists in this field.

Keywords: world-system theory, Eric Wolf, globalisation, sociocultural reproduction, Great Divides
