Abstract

English abstract

Among the wide spectrum of research on the topic of violence in the social sciences, the sociology of violence in the german speaking countries stands out for formulating some innovative hypothesis. What are the potentials of this proposed paradigm-change for / in the light of a particular difficult and up to nowadays barely theorised field of research, namely sexualised violence? This question is examined by means of analysing an example of gang rape in Lowland South America (resp. the threat of gang rape in ritual contexts), which is confronted with the new sociological theories as well as with feminist approaches. The purpose of this confrontation is the formulation of a first basis or outline for the elaboration of a “feminist social anthropology of violence”.

Keywords: anthropology of violence, sociology of violence, gang rape, Lowland South America, Upper Xingú
