Tropical Ecosystem Research

Tropical rainforests are key components of global water and carbon cycles and therefore highly relevant for earth climate processes. However, it is still unclear whether tropical rainforests act as sinks or sources of atmospheric carbon dioxide, since we lack a mechanistic understanding of the linkage between interannual climate variability, biogeochemical processes and primary production of tropical rainforests. This project aims at providing new insights into relationships between environmental controls and mechanisms driving tropical ecosystem functions and thus resolve future responses of tropical rainforests to global changes.
