University of Vienna. Making a difference for society.

Making a difference. Since 1365.

COVID-19, climate change, migration or digitisation: Our society is facing diverse and constantly changing challenges. The University of Vienna provides the necessary academic foundations to adapt to this change and addresses questions from the society.

Cooperation

The University of Vienna cooperates with partners from society in a variety of research projects. The Third Mission project of the University of Vienna provides an overview of the Third Mission activities carried out at the University of Vienna. The diverse Third Mission activities have been collected from a university-wide online survey. All these activities were allocated to the dimensions of social commitment, knowledge transfer or technology and innovation transfer.

Participation

Conducting research together: Citizen science refers to the involvement of citizens in the research process. The University of Vienna has been a member of the Citizen Science Network Austria since 2017. Recently, the number of citizen science projects (in German) is growing continuously. From 14 to 16 September, the sixth edition of the Austrian Citizen Science Conference takes place online, under the motto "Citizen Science: Anspruch und Bedeutung" (citizen science: aspirations and relevance). This transdisciplinary conference is organised by the University of Vienna.

Example

Coronavirus: How it changes our life

From transformations in our family life to the impact on logistics chains: Experts of the University of Vienna talk about the consequences of the coronavirus in various areas in an uni:view dossier (in German).

Knowledge transfer

Bringing research closer to young people and children: The Vienna Children’s University enables children to attend lectures and workshops, talk to academics and get a first impression of the University of Vienna and its numerous areas of activity. The Lange Nacht der Forschung (long night of research)(in German) is the biggest event for academia and research: Under the motto ‘Digital Transformation’, part of this year’s programme is offered virtually. The Campus of the University of Vienna is a place where members of the academic world and members of the public can meet at various events.

Telling impact stories

Based on selected examples, the contributions published regularly on the Societal Impact Platform (in German) illustrate how social science research makes a difference in a variety of ways. Social sciences do not only generate knowledge about society, but also for society and together with society: Often, the research process already involves intensive interaction between researchers and people in practice. Therefore, knowledge transfer does not only begin after research has been completed, but already takes place during the generation of knowledge and work in the field.

Example

Media education for equity and tolerance

Racist insults, discrimination and hate speech are spreading – both online and offline. The EU project MEET (in German) aims at providing a toolkit for teachers and promoting an inclusive practice of media education at schools. The political scientists Birigt Sauer, Benjamin Opratko and Fanny Müller-Uri represent the University of Vienna in this project.
