Zdouc, Mitja
Tenure-Track professorship in Natural Product Research at the Faculty of Life Sciences
My research
Modern medicine is founded on the availability of safe and effective drugs. Many of these drugs are derived from natural products, small molecules produced by a variety of organisms, including bacteria, fungi, and plants. My research combines data science, machine learning, tool development, and experimental work for the targeted characterization of novel, bioactive natural products. With this work, I hope to contribute to the development of effective antimicrobials addressing the ongoing antibiotic resistance crisis, and to spearhead sustainable crop protection agents, contributing to the objectives of “One Health”. I also want to address the global inequalities in generating and accessing knowledge by establishing linked open data in natural product research.
