In addition to overall university rankings, academic subject rankings are also published. In the current THE World University Rankings by Subject 2026, the University of Vienna is ranked in a total of nine subjects, with six of these subjects even placing the University of Vienna among the top 100 worldwide. The University of Vienna performs best in ‘Arts and Humanities’, where it has climbed to 22nd place, putting it among the top 3% worldwide.
In the current ‘THE World University Rankings by Subject 2026’, the University of Vienna has largely maintained its previous year's level and remains in the top 100 in six subjects. The University of Vienna even ranks among the top 50 worldwide in three subjects – Arts and Humanities (rank 22), Social Sciences (rank 41) and Law (rank 46) – and is also in the top 100 in Psychology (rank 56), Education Studies (rank 84) and Physical Science (rank 95).
The University of Vienna is the highest-ranked Austrian university in all subjects, with the sole exception of computer science, where the Vienna University of Technology comes out on top. The University of Vienna was ranked in 9 out of a total of 11 subjects (it was not ranked in engineering and medical and health).
It improved in four subjects, saw a moderate decline in four, and remained unchanged in the subject area of Business and Economics. The results at a glance:

University of Vienna ranks #95 in THE's overall university ranking
In the THE overall university ranking, the University of Vienna continued its long-term upward trend in the Times Higher Education (THE) ranking for 2026 and reached a new milestone: For the first time, the University of Vienna is among the top 100, ranking 95th – making it the first Austrian university ever to make it into the top 100. Although numerous universities were newly included in the ranking, the University of Vienna was able to advance and is now among the top 4% of all ranked universities worldwide.
