In the latest World University Rankings published by the British company Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), the University of Vienna is ranked in 140th position, having improved by 12 positions (2025: 152nd). The University of Vienna thus remains by far the best-ranked Austrian university in the QS Rankings.
The University of Vienna was able to progress thanks to improvements with regard to its employer reputation and academic reputation. "The University of Vienna is thus continuing a long-term upward trend. The latest ranking result shows that the University of Vienna can compete internationally as a top-class hub for research and studying," summarises Rector Sebastian Schütze. It was only in October 2025 that the University of Vienna reached a groundbreaking milestone, becoming the first Austrian university to make it into the top 100 in the THE Rankings.
“However, sufficient funding is essential if we are to continue on this successful path,” Schütze continues: “To maintain Austria’s position as an excellent location for studying and research, we now need planning certainty, a clear commitment from the federal government to internationally competitive universities and sufficient funding for 2028–2030,” Schütze demands.
