Searching for biologically driven changes on Mars and investigating the planet's potential as a habitat for past or present life are the main objectives of the upcoming exploration missions to Mars. Since samples from our neighbouring planet will soon be available to us, we should gain a better understanding of how to investigate these samples for traces of life and potential biosignatures. The ERC Consolidator Grant project aims at developing such an analysis: In the laboratory, chemolithotrophic microbes are bred on Martian meteorite rocks and corresponding fingerprints are produced. The analysis of the mineralogical and metabolic biosignatures on Martian meteorites using laboratory, field and space experiments will allow us to better understand and critically interpret data collected during future missions to Mars – an important step in the search for life beyond Earth.
