During the 20th century, Soviet Central Asia was turned from an overwhelmingly rural region into a hub of industrialisation. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, industries and infrastructures collapsed. Mining and industrial centres went through a severe crisis. In the project "Anthropogenic Environments in the Future Tense: Loss, Change and Hope in Post-Soviet Industrial Landscapes," Jeanine Dagyeli will explore how people deal with this change locally, how they conceptualise their futures between industrial labour and alternative livelihoods, and what kinds of, sometimes conflicting, affective memories they connect to landscapes, labour and life plans in these regions.
