Migration and cultural identities are crucial issues of our time. Yet these are not new. In her ERC Consolidator Grant, the classical archaeologist Naoíse Mac Sweeney will lead a team investigating migration and mobility around the Mediterranean region during the Iron Age. Using a combination of approaches from landscape archaeology and migration studies, one strand of the team’s work will trace routes and patterns of mobility, focusing in particular on the establishment of new cities and settlements. A second strand of the research will consider how cultural identities emerged at these new settlements, focusing in particular on the development of a conscious Greek identity.   Note: Grant transferred to the University of Vienna (2020)
