Oliver Marchart’s ERC project Prefiguring Democratic Futures aims at investigating alternative political institutions beyond the existing liberal democratic institutions, which have the potential to promote the democratisation of democracy. Therefore, the project recovers institutions that have been largely forgotten in the political history of ideas and evaluates whether they are updatable from the perspective of democracy. In addition, the project analyses current activist and artistic practices of inventing new and appropriating existing institutional formats. This empirical work is integrated into a theory of democracy of political imagination that is yet to be developed.
