Research areas:

* Systems biology of somatosensation and chronic pain
* Development, maturation and aging in the context of chronic pain
* Pre-clinical and translational pain research
* Functional and quantitative pain proteomics

"According to the latest estimates, 1.5 million people are affected by chronic pain in Austria alone. Unfortunately, the treatment of chronic pain is usually inadequate and associated with severe side effects, which increases patients' suffering. Our preclinical and translational research on chronic pain aims to uncover underlying molecular mechanisms in order to optimize future pain treatments." (Manuela Schmidt)
