Abstract

English abstract

This article aims at discussing the epistemic dimension of colonial and postcolonial violence by the concept of „epistemic violence“. Domination and exploitation during the European colonial expansion took not only place on a material, (bio)political or social level, but the „coloniality of knowledge“ came to constitute a basic element of the emerging power-matrix and began to structure the cognitive, epistemic and cultural dimension of colonial relations. Consequently some insights will be presented that are able to point out the different dimensions of epistemic violence. Finally there will be discussed, how epistemic violence came to be operative within cultural and social anthropology. The relation between anthropology and coloniality will be pointed out through the discipline’s methodology as well through its underlying episteme. As strategies to overcome this epistemic violence some thesis by the modernity/coloniality collective will be high lightened in order to contribute to the decolonization of knowledge, especially within cultural and social anthropology.

Keywords: Epistemic violence, Social and Cultural Anthropology, coloniality, eurocentrism, decolonization
