The history of the University of Vienna starts in 1365 and is closely intertwined with the development of science, society and the city. With around 11,000 employees, including approximately 7,700 academic staff, the University of Vienna is Austria’s largest research institution and at the same time the country’s largest educational institution.
Its 20 faculties and centres are home to approximately 85,000 students from Austria and around the world. With 185 degree programmes, the University offers the most diverse range of studies in Austria.
Founded in the year 1365, the Alma Mater Rudolphina Vindobonensis celebrated its 650th anniversary in 2015 with a wide range of festive events. In autumn 2022 the University of Vienna had the pleasure of congratulating the physicist Anton Zeilinger, for many years a professor at the University, after he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics. In international higher education and subject-specific rankings, the University of Vienna regularly ranks in the top five per cent of all universities worldwide.
