Based on the example of the European Ariane launch system, Nina Klimburg-Witjes from the Department of Science and Technology Studies of the University of Vienna and her team will investigate the complex relationships between large-scale technological projects, European integration and visions of space against the background of the new race for outer space. From empirical and theoretical perspectives, her project FutureSpace will provide novel insights into the way in which (quite controversial) visions of space shape European cooperation in the present – and how geopolitical relations affect plans for the future of outer space. The objective of the project is to develop a topography that enables a better understanding of the interplay between political and technological dimensions of European integration and visions of space.
