"The internationalization and globalization of legal relationships is leading to a steady increase in civil proceedings with cross-border implications. The spectrum ranges from civil proceedings involving disputes arising from international business transactions, to the (collective) enforcement of consumer rights, to cross-border restructuring and insolvency proceedings involving the debtor's assets in different countries. Recent examples include mass proceedings resulting from the "VW diesel scandal" and insolvencies of international corporations such as Air Berlin or Thomas Cook. The aim of my research is to scrutinize the existing legal framework in order to contribute to the development of new solutions. The economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic in particular are fueling the scientific discussion about instruments that are available internationally and in Austria for the restructuring of companies."
